Description
This is a vintage set of six milk glass salad plates made by the Westmoreland Glass Company. The company was located in Grapeville, Pennsylvania, and was in operation from 1890 until 1984.Famous for its significant production of quality Depression glassware, Westmoreland Glass was best known for its milk glass and was one of the top producers in the United States. These plates measure approximately 7 ½” in diameter and feature an assortment of the company’s
cheery hand-painted fruit designs that include pear, cherry, plum, blackberry, grape and peach.
Typical of the Westmoreland “Beaded Edge” pattern #22 (issued in the late 1930s to the 1950s), each plate features a delicate beaded edge along the rim that adds a simple elegance to each plate.
The pear plate is marked with the WG embossed stamp while the other five are unmarked, which is not unusual since the company rarely marked pieces made between the 1920s and 1950s.
Despite the following flaws these six salad plates are in very good condition.
There are some manufacturing flaws, minor water marks and surface scratches, roughness along the beading and yellow discoloration on the bases, probably marks from metal display hangers.
The peach plate shows some paint wear and a tiny nick on one bead while the cherry plate has a nick to one bead as well.
Otherwise there are no chips, cracks or any other evidence of damage.
