    Description

This is a very rare low quality (its a little greyish too, see photo) hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph (not a digital inkjet print) custom printed in a darkroom from a copy negative from the original, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board **which is included as part of the print that you can see here (see photo)  with caption and photography information of the Hilo area 1910-20? of the Big Island. The photo says 'On the way to Kuhio wharf'. The original came from a family scrapbook and this is the only one we printed so far. It is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has preservation tips  included in the label on the back. It has some blemishes and uneven tones, and was from a very old photo, still looks good in a frame though for historical purposes. We will probably never print this one again.
It would make a great gift for someone who may have lived in this area, or likes historic images of Hawaii.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original and reproduction photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Larger unmounted prints are also available, please inquire.

    PLEASE ALSO NOTE
    :
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. It was taken on film, not digital, so it will look grainier and not as sharp as many computer type prints. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a 35 mm negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board color around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the edges of the photo which you can see here. Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for suggested visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
